Fritzbox 6690 Cable – new top model with Wifi 6 for cable connections

AVM unveiled two new Fritzboxes at the Broadband World Forum (BBWF) at the end of September 2021. Both are mesh-compatible and radio via Wifi 6. atechbook reveals what else the two new routers can do and for which connections they are intended.

AVM introduced two new routers in the fall of 2021. One is the Fritzbox 6690 Cable for cable connections, and the other is the Fritzbox 4060 for connecting to an existing fiber-optic or cable modem. Both new Fritzboxes are available in stores now.

AVM calls the Fritzbox 6690 Cable nothing more than the “new top model with Wifi 6 for the cable connection”. It has the shape of earlier upright cable routers like the 6590 Cable and achieves speeds of up to 6 Gbit/s downstream and 2 Gbit/s upstream thanks to 2×2-OFDM(A) channel bundling according to DOCSIS 3.1. It is also fast in WLAN thanks to Wifi 6 support. It achieves up to 4.8 Gbit/s at its peak via the 5 GHz band, and 1.2 Gbit/s via the 2.4 GHz band.

The Fritzbox 6690 Cable comes with various connection options. These include a 2.5 Gigabit port, three Gigabit LAN ports and two USB 3.0 ports. It also has an integrated telephone system including an answering machine and thus allows the connection of various telephone types – from DECT to ISDN to IP. With the Fritz!OS, AVM also makes other functions available via the Fritzbox. In addition to Smart Home, these include parental controls, the mesh overview and various other settings.

Fritzbox 4060

The Fritzbox 4060 is a tri-band router that is intended for connection to a cable, DSL or fiber optic modem. The shape is completely new and has not yet been seen in AVM’s product range. The Fritzbox 4060 is predominantly white, stands upright and is somewhat reminiscent of Nintendo’s Wii.

Inside, however, they have a lot to offer. Among other things, AVM has installed three radio units and a total of 12 antennas, which are supposed to provide WLAN data rates of up to 6 Gbit/s – just like the Fritzbox 6690 Cable. The 4060 also has the same 2.5 Gigabit LAN and three Gigabit LAN ports. Even the USB 3.0 port is not missing.

As the first model from the 40 series, the Fritzbox 4060 comes with a DECT telephone system for up to six telephones. With it, all smart home applications known from AVM can be used. However, AVM also sees the Fritzbox 4060 as a relevant member within the mesh system. Together with the Triband-Repeater 6000, it is supposed to provide large-area WLAN for many devices.

The Fritzbox 6690 Cable as well as the 4060 are available in stores now. The cable router has a recommended retail price of 319 euros and comes with a manufacturer’s warranty of 5 years. AVM offers the Fritzbox 4060 for 259 Euros.
