Vodafone abolishes Red tariffs! What customers can now expect

Until now, Vodafone has marketed its mobile rates under the name “Red. But that’s over as of June. What’s changing with Vodafone’s mobile rates is revealed by atechbook.

As of June 1, Vodafone is launching the GigaMobil rates. They replace the previously available Red rates. Nothing will change for customers in terms of price. However, they will get more data volume.

Growing demand for mobile data in Germany

People in Germany are surfing the Internet on their mobile devices more and more. According to Statista, the data volume transmitted via mobile communications in this country climbed from around 2.75 billion gigabytes in 2019 to 3.97 billion gigabytes in 2020. Vodafone itself is talking about data consumption of 1.4 billion gigabytes in 2021 on its own network – an increase of 27 percent compared to the previous year. So the Germans’ hunger for data is high.

The network operator is responding to this development by changing its mobile rates on June 1, 2022. With the changeover, Vodafone is not only changing the tariff designation from “Red” to “GigaMobil,” the provider is also adjusting the content of the offers. The new cell phone rates include more data volume, but there are no changes to the allnet flat rate, the GigaDepot, or the price.

GigaMobil rates from Vodafone in detail

Vodafone is introducing two divisions of its GigaMobil rates – one for young people up to age 28 and one for conventional users. Both the GigaMobil and GigaMobil Young rates retain the components previously known from the Red and Red Young offers. These include a flat rate for calls and text messages to all German networks, support for LTE Max and 5G if available, regulated EU roaming, WiFi calling, and GigaDepot. The latter allows customers to take the data volume not used in the current month into the next month.

What has changed is the data volume included in the rates. The smallest offer, the Red XS, previously included 4 GB. The new GigaMobil XS comes with 5 GB instead. In the S offer, the data volume increases from 10 GB to 12 GB and in the GigaMobil M, customers even get an extra 5 GB (25 GB instead of 20 GB).

It should be noted that Vodafone does not offer a GigaMobil replacement for the previously marketed Red L with 40 GB. A counterpart is missing in the new rate list. However, the cell phone rate with unlimited data volume is still available. As before, the Unlimited rate costs 79.99 euros per month, but is now called GigaMobil XL.
