13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim” was released for the PlayStation 4 in 2019 and received good reviews across the board. It even received a surprising nomination for “Best Narrative” at the Game Awards 2020, but the game had to admit defeat to the superior “The Last of Us Part II”. However, the game has not been a big success so far, which was not least due to the lack of availability. Now, the title will be released on April 12 for the Nintendo Switch, making it accessible to a much larger audience.

A group of teenagers live in the fictional city of Ashitaba in Japan. One of them is Juro Kurabe, who suddenly has dreams about the future of the city, which is threatened by large machines called Kaijus. When some of his classmates have the same dreams, in which they fight the Kaijus with the help of giant mechs called Sentinels, it becomes clear that they are visions partly set in the past or even in the future.

The extremely compelling storyline is told from the perspective of all 13 teenagers, with new important information to discover in each plot thread. Not only do the narrative perspectives overlap, but so do the time levels. The plot is mainly set in 1985, but at times important events also take place in World War 2 or at the end of the 22nd century – “Dark” sends its regards.

What can we expect from the release?

Until now, “13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim” had an existence as a niche title, which was probably mainly due to the fact that the game was only accessible to such a limited extent. The Switch version now promises a lot: On the one hand, both the story and real-time strategy mode fit the controls of Nintendo’s console perfectly. For another, there is little comparable on the Switch so far, even if certain elements are reminiscent of titles like Octopath Traveler – with much more detailed and beautiful graphics, of course!

A couple of new features have also been announced for the Switch version. For example, each of the 13 protagonists gets new weapon and armor parts. If you look at the reactions that followed the release announcement, they are positive almost across the board. In this still young year of 2022, the vanilla game stands out as a novelty on the console so far. This is proven by the rating comparison alone: well-known industry portals like Metacritic, Nintendo Life or Game Pro consistently give high scores of around nine stars or 90 points. So if you haven’t seen “13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim” for the Nintendo Switch yet, we highly recommend it for release on April 12.
