FIFA 23 cover shows a woman for the first time

The cover for FIFA 23 has finally been revealed – and for the first time it also shows a female soccer player!

Traditionally, EA unveils the new cover of the next FIFA game in summer. For the 2023 edition there is a surprise. In addition to Kylian Mbappé, striker Samantha “Sam” Kerr is also featured.

While Mbappé is featured on the cover for the third time in a row, it’s the first time for Kerr. She is also at the same time the first woman ever to get the prominent spot from FIFA. There was already a cover version in 2016 with Chrisine Sinclair, Alex Morgan and Stephanie Catley, but only in the USA.

Australian Kerr is currently a striker for Chelsea FC. She was champion with the London club in 2019/20 in a season cut short because of Corona. The strong team then lost to FC Barcelona in the 2020/21 Champions League final. In addition, Kerr is the cross-gender record scorer of the Australian national team with 54 goals (as of July 2022).

In addition to the joint cover of Kerr and Mbappé on the FIFA 23 Ultimate Edition, there are also individual covers of each of the two exceptional athletes.

Further plans for the Football Manager

Since 2021, there are plans to give women’s soccer a platform in Football Manager. Although no separate version is planned, the teams of the women’s league are to be integrated into the existing version.

The basis for the corresponding databases as well as animations is missing so far. Accordingly, the costs for this project will be high. Director Miles Jacobson says: “We believe in equality for all and want to be part of the solution. We want to be part of the process to equalize women’s and men’s soccer.”

FIFA 22 already featured 17 women’s national teams. With Sam Kerr on the cover, developer EA is probably aiming to include even more teams.

FIFA 23 cover sets important sign

atechbook says

“With the new cover a long overdue sign is set in my opinion. Women’s soccer has become more and more important for years, the players more and more visible. The format of the double cover also has a symbolic effect in this context. It’s a bit of a shame, of course, that Sam Kerr’s single cover is only available in Australia and New Zealand.” – Marlene Polywka, Editor
