It has been rumored for a few months that Sonos wants to launch its own voice control on the market. Now it has become known that the plans are gradually taking shape. What is known and whether “Sonos Voice Control” can be an alternative to Alexa and Google Assistant, you can read below.
Many speakers and soundbars work via voice control. The most widespread are Google Assistant and Alexa from Amazon. Sonos’ devices also support these, but the manufacturer now wants to present its own voice assistant “Sonos Voice Control”. The launch is already planned for June 1, 2022.
However, the service is not intended to compete with the already used voice assistants Alexa and Google Assistant, but to complement them – at least for the time being. However, it is conceivable that “Sonos Voice Control” could establish itself as an alternative if the voice control is accepted by the customers.
Sonos Voice Control does not support all music streaming services
Music playback is supposed to be controllable with the call “Hey Sonos” and work on all Sonos devices that have a microphone. The products support well over 100 streaming services, but the new voice control will initially only be compatible with select music streaming services. These include Apple Music, Amazon Music and Deezer, among others. Spotify is not included for now, The Verge reports .
However, there is supposed to be one big difference to Alexa and Google Assistant. Sonos wants to offer its own voice control “Sonos Voice Control” not cloud-bound. This means that what is spoken will not end up in a cloud, but will remain completely anonymous. However, this could become a problem, since the stored data in the cloud could provide for service improvements. In short: sensible from a data protection point of view, possibly a shortcoming in terms of further development.
Not in Germany for the time being
Initially, the speaker manufacturer will probably only offer its own voice assistant in the USA. All Sonos products with the S2 software will receive the voice control via an update. The international rollout will probably follow a bit later. However, it is still unclear when exactly that will happen.
Sonos did not want to comment on the rumors yet, but there are some hints that “Sonos Voice Control” will come soon. Among other things, the company has published a job advertisement in which it is looking for a software test engineer with “Voice Experience”. More details could emerge in the coming weeks.
