Super Nintendo turns 30! Do you still know the cult games?

On August 24, 1991, the Super Nintendo was released in the USA. For the 30th birthday of the cult console, atechbook shows the 10 most successful games.

Ranking based on worldwide sales figures of games for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) and also includes release dates.

10th Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong’s Double Trouble!

Ringing in the top 10 is the third installment in the wildly successful Donkey Kong series. With 3,510,000 copies sold, it does lag behind its predecessors. But you have to consider that on the release date, November 22, 1996, the successor console, the Nintendo 64, was already on the market in Japan and the USA. In this respect, a quite remarkable sales performance of one of the most mature games for the SNES.

9th Street Fighter 2 Turbo

The 4,100,000 copies sold of Street Fighter 2 Turbo are also quite remarkable. After all, the game released on June 11, 1993 was a spin-off of the even more successful “Super Street Fighter 2: The World Warrior”. SF2 Turbo featured four new characters and the faster Turbo mode. Otherwise, it was the identical game.

8. Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island

The 8th place of the top 10 goes to a Mario title and this one had it all. This time, the focus was on the dino Yoshi. The plumbers Mario and Luigi only appeared in the form of helpless babies who had to bring different colored Yoshis to the finish line. A whole new gameplay and visual experience, the game sold a total of 4,120,000 copies worldwide since August 5, 1995.

The Zelda franchise around the hero Link is one of the most popular in the Nintendo universe. The super-popular first part and the not-so-popular second part both appeared on the predecessor console, the NES. “The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past” breathed new life into the series, selling 4,160,000 copies and becoming an instant classic since its release on November 21, 1991, and is the second oldest game on the list.

6. donkey kong country 2: diddy kong’s quest

6th place again goes to the monkey Donkey Kong. Well, actually others have to take the credit here. Because in the second part called “Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy Kong’s Quest” the players control the agile Diddy Kong as well as the long toothed Dixie Kong, who celebrated her debut in this part. This was experienced by 5,150,000 players since November 20, 1995.

5th Street Fighter 2: The World Warrior

6,300,000 buyers secured a copy of the cult beat-em-up since June 10, 1992. The game around Ryu, Ken and the other fighters set the standard in the genre for years. By the way, if you’re looking for the first part, you shouldn’t have too high expectations. The arcade game from 1987 is neither a classic nor particularly good.

4. Super Mario Kart

The game with “Mario” in its name was the start of one of the most popular game series of all time and founded the genre of fun racers. Racing games have never been as much fun as the kart game from the Nintendo crowd. 8,760,000 copies sold since August 27, 1992 speak for themselves. And who didn’t have fun blowing away their buddy’s balloons in multiplayer mode?

3. donkey kong country

The top 3 is ushered in by the first and by far the most successful part of the Donkey Kong series. 9,300,000 games sold since its release on November 21, 1994 make it more successful than the two successors combined. A masterpiece of the developer studio “Rareware” (later “Rare”).

2. Super Mario All-Stars

Super Mario All-Stars is just one of two SNES games to crack the magic 10 million mark. 10,500,000 buyers have enjoyed the NES classic since July 14, 1993. Super Mario Allstars, in fact, consisted of four Mario jump-‘n’-runs from the predecessor console, one of which was previously only available in Japan.

1. Super Mario World

The top seller, and therefore the best-selling game for the Super Nintendo, is Super Mario World. 20,610,000 games Nintendo brought to gamers. The game was released at the launch of the SNES on November 21, 1990 in Japan, making it older than the SNES in the rest of the world. It’s an absolute classic that every avid gamer should have played at least once.
