Apple event takes place on Oct. 18, and here’s what we expect to happen

Apple usually holds several events towards the end of the year. The iPhone event already took place in September. Another one will now follow in October.

It’s official: marketing manager Greg Joswiak posted an invite for Apple’s October event on Twitter. The warp-jump-looking video first shows the Apple logo, then the word “Unleashed.” (Eng. “unleashed”) and then the numbers “10.18.” So the next Apple event will take place on October 18. Meanwhile, an announcement can also be found on the Apple page. According to it, the presentation will start at 7 p.m. Central European Time. Not only new, stronger MacBook Pros are expected, but also an improved Mac mini – and maybe finally AirPods 3 ?

New MacBook Pros in two sizes

Last year in November, Apple introduced the first MacBooks with the in-house-developed M1 chip. Despite this, the company continues to sell high-end MacBook Pro 13″ and MacBook Pro 16″ models with Intel processors. However, these could now also get successors with Apple hardware.

Leaker “Ky Young” posted a screenshot on Twitter that is supposed to show the configuration of an alleged MacBook Pros with an Apple M1X chip. The screenshot shows that the MacBook is connected to an iPhone. In the column about the device hardware, it is noted that the MacBook is equipped with a developer version of the M1X chip. In addition, the MacBook Pro has 512 gigabytes of internal storage and 16 GB of RAM. The device designation “DVT-X88102C” contains the hint that it is still an unfinished prototype. “DVT” stands for Design Validation Testing – in this phase, the design is still being worked on, changes are still possible. This is followed by Production Validation Testing (PVT), where final bugs are fixed before the final version is released.

The M1X is said to be a more powerful version of Apple’s first completely in-house developed chip for laptops and desktop computers. The new M1X MacBook Pros could come with 14- and 16-inch screens. The 14-inch model would replace the current 13-inch MacBook Pro with an Intel chip. Both sizes will likely have a new case and, for the first time since 2016, more ports than just USB-C/Thunderbolt. Speculation is about the return of MagSafe, as well as an HDMI port and an SD card slot.

We think the presentation of new MacBook Pros with M1X is very likely. Not only because the 13-inch model finally deserves a new design, but also because Apple wants to get rid of the last remnants of the Intel era. Furthermore, at the time of writing, the purchase pages for both MacBook Pros were briefly unavailable. Instead, a message appeared that we were too early – and pre-orders only start at 2 p.m. Central European Time. That was probably just a coincidence, because the pages are now accessible again. However, it could mean that Apple is already preparing the leek of the new MacBook Pros.

Mac mini with more power?

Together with the M1 MacBooks, Apple also introduced a Mac mini with M1 last year. However, Apple still sells higher-priced models with Intel chips here as well. Apple could also replace these with a new M1X version.

The Mac mini will also get a new case with additional ports and a magnetic power cable.

The same applies for the Mac mini as for the MacBook Pros: The presentation with the new M1X is already likely because Apple wants to get rid of the last Intel devices. The Mac mini’s purchase page was also unavailable for a brief moment. Instead, the same pre-order message as for the MacBooks appeared.

Official launch of macOS Monterey?

Monterey has already been in beta testing for months. If Apple introduces new MacBooks and Mac mini at the October event, the final version of the next macOS distribution will probably also be launched. macOS Monterey gets some features that we already know from iOS. These include Spatial Audio in combination with AirPods, as well as the portrait mode for FaceTime and FaceTime Links. SharePlay for listening to music or watching series together, Live Text and the new Focus mode are also included.

AirPods 3

Apple already unveiled the AirPods Max over-ear headphones this year. But rumors about a successor to the original AirPods have been swirling for a long time. The current, second generation has already been on the market since March 2019. We already expected the presentation in April. Only recently, industry insider “Nikkei Asia” reported that production could have been running since August.
