Cheap at the discounter – how good is the Motorola Moto G 5G Plus?

If you are looking for a 5G smartphone, you will currently find one at the discount grocer Aldi. The Motorola Moto G 5G Plus is available at a very good price. But is the smartphone also recommendable? atechbook did the check.

A 5G smartphone has to transmit reliably in the already expanded networks. Motorola’s Moto G 5G Plus manages that. It copes particularly well in Deutsche Telekom’s 5G network, but also runs solidly in Vodafone’s and O2’s networks. The latter is important when buyers buy the smartphone from Aldi and want to use the included SIM card from Aldi Talk. They use them for prepaid calls in the O2 network.

Aldi Nord sells the Motorola Moto G 5G Plus in the version with 4 GB RAM and 64 GB internal storage online via its web store. The smartphone can only be ordered between July 8 and July 31, or while stocks last. It costs 199 Euros and comes with the Aldi Talk starter pack, which actually costs 12.99 Euros.

Info about Aldi Talk

Aldi Talk is a prepaid provider that operates in the O2 network. The starter package comes with a credit of 10 Euros and allows booking various options on the SIM card. There is a choice of pure Internet flat rates, but also all-inclusive offers consisting of allnet and SMS flat rates starting at 7.99 euros per 28 days. Without a booked option, connections to other Aldi Talk customers cost 3 cents per minute and SMS, and 11 cents to all other networks.

The offer is very good – other (online) retailers charge prices starting at 213 Euros for the same version of the smartphone. So, in terms of price, buyers of the Moto G 5G Plus do not go wrong at Aldi. But is the 5G smartphone with its mid-range features actually worth it, or are there perhaps better alternatives?

Moto G 5G Plus – Equipment check

With its 6.7-inch display with Full HD+ resolution and 90 Hz, the Moto G 5G Plus brings a very solid screen setup. However, it is anything but small, which buyers with small hands or those who want to buy the smartphone for their child should note. The splash-proof casing is made of plastic and has a modern look thanks to the Fullview display. A simple protective case is included in the scope of delivery, as well as a power adapter and a USB-C cable. However, Motorola does not include headphones.

Performance and system

The 5G smartphone is also pretty well equipped technically for a price of under 200 Euros. It has a long-lasting battery with 5000 mAh, but it can only be charged with a maximum of 20 watts. That is okay, but not as fast as some other devices manage. The Snapdragon 765G, which powers the Moto G 5G Plus and is one of the flagship chips in the mid-range, is pleasing. In addition, there is the mentioned 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of storage, which can be expanded via micro-SD card. Motorola also offers the smartphone with 6 GB and 128 GB as an alternative, but the prices for this model are at least 256 Euros. It uses dual-band WLAN as well as LTE and 5G. Thus, it only lacks WLAN ax (Wifi 6) in the wireless range.

Motorola has equipped the Moto G 5G Plus with Android 10 ex-factory. An update to the latest Android 11 is already available. The interface is very clean and only slightly customized, which many users will like. In addition to unlocking via face or PIN, there is also a fingerprint sensor for securing the system. This is located on the side of the casing.

Camera

The Moto G 5G Plus is also equipped with a quad camera whose main sensor takes pictures with up to 48 megapixels. In addition, there is an ultra-wide-angle with 8 megapixels, a macro lens with 5 megapixels, and a 2-megapixel depth sensor. The front camera also offers several sensors. Motorola relies on a dual camera with 16 megapixels wide-angle and 8 megapixels ultra-wide-angle. Group selfies can thus be taken particularly comfortably thanks to the larger image field.

Conclusion and price comparison

All in all, the Motorola Moto G 5G Plus has a really good configuration, which you would actually expect in a much more expensive model. It is not for nothing that the device made it into the list of the best 5G smartphones. In the field of 5G smartphones, the Moto G 5G Plus is currently almost without an alternative with its low price. Only the Xiaomi Redmi Note 9T could be mentioned as an alternative. It is available at a similar price and also supports 5G. However, it offers a slightly lower camera configuration and is also smaller than the Motorola smartphone with 6.53 inches.
