iPhone 14 could get new name

Apple will probably present the iPhone 14 again in September. However, reports about the possible features of the 2022 generation are already piling up. This article provides an overview of all the rumors.

The iPhone 13 is only a few months old, and the successor is already being hotly discussed. Many are hoping that the iPhone 14 will have the innovations that the 13 model lacked. But what exactly could the new iPhones look like this year? atechbook summarizes all reports about the upcoming Apple phone here.

Current reports on the iPhone 14: Is a new name coming?

Meanwhile, it seems almost certain that Apple will once again introduce four new iPhone models in September. Until now, it was assumed that the iPhone Mini would be replaced by the iPhone Max. However, this designation would really mix up the iPhone line. Because in addition to an iPhone 14 and an iPhone 14 Max, there would also be an iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max – quite a few Max models. So it doesn’t seem that unlikely that Apple might change the naming to better distinguish the different devices.

Chance Miller, editor at 9to5Mac, therefore thinks it is possible that Apple will bring back the name “Plus”. The iPhone 14 Max would then be called iPhone Plus. There have already been Plus models in previous generations. One remembers, for example, the successful iPhone 7 Plus or iPhone 8 Plus.

Design and display

Change in display size

For the 2022 iPhone generation, one thing seems relatively certain – there will no longer be an iPhone 14 mini with a 5.4-inch display. Apple had already prematurely stopped the production of the mini with the iPhone 12. Many market observers are certain that the iPhone 13 will be the last of its kind. But that doesn’t mean we won’t see four iPhone 14 models. Apple is rumored to be planning a new model called iPhone 14 Max. It is supposed to be just as big as the Pro Max with a 6.7-inch screen. Accordingly, the following four models are expected:

  • iPhone 14 with 6.1 inches and iPhone 14 Max with 6.7 inches.
  • iPhone 14 Pro with 6.1 inches and iPhone 14 Pro Max with 6.7 inches.

Will Face ID move under the display?

In the iPhone 13, Apple reduced the size of the infamous notch – the small indentation in the display where the camera and Face ID sensors sit – by 20 percent. However, other smartphone manufacturers are ahead of Apple and only leave a small, pill-shaped notch in the display, which houses so-called hole-punch cameras. The iPhone 14 could now follow suit.

Rumors have been circulating for some time that Apple could install the sensors for the Face ID function directly under the display. This is technically possible, since manufacturers like ZTE, Xiaomi, and even Samsung with the Z Fold 3 already install the front camera under the display. With the latest pixel technology, the cameras disappear completely and can hardly be distinguished from the rest of the screen. However, the biggest limitation so far is the picture quality, since the cameras practically have to take pictures past the pixels above. Face ID does not have that problem, though, since the sensors only have to recognize the outline of the face.

In all likelihood, Apple will take a two-pronged approach with the iPhone 14. While the front-facing camera will be placed in a small hole-punch recess, Face ID will disappear completely under the display. Leaker Dylandkt, according to the site ” Apple Track ” with an accuracy rate of 77.5 percent, has information that Apples could not determine any restrictions in the functionality of Face ID in tests.

After aluminum now also titanium?

Speculation about the material Apple might use to build the iPhone 14 is also interesting. So far, the smartphones have mostly been made of aluminum, and the company also uses stainless steel for its Apple Watch. According to analysts from JP Morgan Chase, there will also be a new version of the iPhone 14 made of titanium. This could make the device particularly robust, because titanium is an extremely hard but also lightweight material. It would therefore be much harder to bend and would hardly scratch. Using a process recently patented by Apple, the manufacturer could produce a surface with a high-gloss look. The titanium is chemically anodized and etched, making it resistant to scratches and fingerprints.

New charging technology on the iPhone?

Reports are new about a feature that already exists on Android smartphones but would be new for Apple’s iPhones – the ability to wirelessly charge AirPods with the iPhone, for example. This would then work by placing the AirPods case on the iPhone. The technology is called bilateral charging and has been standard for many Android smartphones for quite some time – here, however, rather under the term “reverse wireless charging”. The technical effort for the implementation should not be too high for Apple either. However, stronger batteries would probably be necessary to not limit the runtime of the iPhones too much.

However, another rumor, which Bloomberg picks up, speaks against the innovation. Apple is said to still be working on a charging mat. The previous model flopped in development and was officially discontinued two years ago. However, should Apple start the project again or at least keep it open, bilateral charging with the iPhone is rather unlikely.

Processor and performance

Actually, Apple always brings its new iPhones in a bundle with a new processor. But this year, things could be a bit different. If the current reports from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo are correct, Apple will continue to use the already known A15 Bionic in the iPhone 14, which we already know from the iPhone 13. Only the Pro models will get a new chip called A16 Bionic. At the same time, the RAM will probably increase to 6 GB in all models, but the faster and more efficient LPDDR 5 is reserved for the Pro models. The gap between the normal and the Pro iPhones would thus grow further. And this equipment is expected:

  • iPhone 14 with 6.1 inches, Apple A15 Bionic and LPDDR 4x.
  • 14 Max with 6.7 inches, Apple A15 Bionic and LPDDR 4x
  • iPhone 14 Pro with 6.1 inches, Apple A16 Bionic and LPDDR 5
  • 14 Pro Max with 6.7 inches, Apple A16 Bionic and LPDDR 5

How compact will the new chip be?

After the iPhone 12 and 13 are already equipped with a chip in the 5-nanometer process, it is actually time for an even more compact model in the iPhone 14. Many therefore expect that the A16 Bionic will probably be manufactured in the 3-nanometer process. Chip manufacturer TSMC is said to already be working on the new, extremely compact SoCs (System on Chip).

The motto “the bigger the better” does not apply to mobile chips. Here, the manufacturers aim for the most compact design possible. On the one hand, to save space in the already cramped casing. On the other hand, to reduce the distances between components such as the numerous transistors. In operation, this leads to lower power consumption and increased performance at the same time.

However, according to “The Information”, the change to more compact production is proving difficult. TSMC is apparently currently very busy with the production of the in-house M1 processors for the MacBooks. The increased order volume and the switch from the 5-nanometer to the 3-nanometer process present the company with challenges that are apparently difficult to overcome in time for mass production of the chips for the iPhone 14.

“The Information” therefore assumes that Apple will not yet be able to ship the iPhone 14 with a 3-nanometer chip. Instead, it will stick with the 5-nanometer model. This is not bad – quite the contrary – but it does not bring the hoped-for leap to more performance and energy efficiency.

Up to 2 TB memory under discussion

There is also news about the storage. Apple has just introduced a 1 TB version, and now there are reports about even more storage in the upcoming model. According to these reports, the two Pro models will be available with up to 2 TB, which will probably exceed all previous price limits. Apple will probably even break the 2000 euro mark.

The more memory is apparently made possible by the use of QLC flash memory. QLC stands for Quadruple Level Cell and indicates the increase in storage density. Thus, more data can be stored on the same surface.

Camera

Industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo predicted as early as 2021 that Apple could finally increase the resolution of the main camera in the iPhone 14 Pro. Kuo has a 75.9 percent accuracy rate when it comes to his predictions, according to ” Apple Track “. The analyst suspects that the iPhone 14 Pro will need a new, higher-resolution sensor to record video in 8K. Accordingly, a 48-megapixel sensor that uses so-called pixel binning for photos is likely. Four pixels are merged into one, so the final resolution is again 12 MP – but with more image details. Many Android manufacturers already use this technology. Samsung, for example, downscales the images of the 108 MP sensor in the Galaxy S22 Ultra to 12 MP.

Kuo’s forecast now gets more substance from a report by the market analysis company ” TrendForce ” (77.4 percent accuracy according to Apple Track). The company with contacts in the supply chain also claims to have learned that Apple will rely on a 48 MP camera in the iPhone 14 Pro. Apple had last increased the resolution from 8 MP to 12 MP in 2015 when the iPhone 6 jumped to iPhone 6s.

There is also a report that talks about changes to the front camera. There is talk of a total of two major updates. According to Kuo, Apple plans to increase the aperture from f/2.2 to f/1.9, which would allow the iPhone 14’s camera to capture more light than before and take better pictures in poorly lit situations.

According to Kuo, Apple also adds autofocus to the front camera for the first time. So far, a fixed focus has been used, which can hardly react to changing distances of the subject. However, Kuo does not have any information about the resolution of the new front-facing camera in the iPhone 14, so we will have to wait and see whether it has a resolution of more than 7 megapixels.

Presentation date and prices

There is still time before the iPhone 14 is unveiled. All reports so far should therefore be taken with a grain of salt.

If it goes according to a tweet from leaker “LeaksApplePro”, the changeover of the iPhone 14 lineup will lead to prices increasing.Due to the discontinuation of the iPhone mini (699 USD), 799 USD would be the entry price for a new iPhone in the future – an indirect price increase. The new iPhone 14 Max will be available for 100 USD more. This is probably a larger version of the iPhone 14 with otherwise unchanged hardware.

The Pro models of the iPhone 14, on the other hand, are expected to get a direct price increase of $100. One reason for this is that the high-end models need to differentiate themselves from the cheaper standard models. However, since the iPhone 14 Max is already supposed to cost USD 899, USD 999 – as with the iPhone 13 Pro – would be too little. Another reason for price increases is said to be increased production costs. Accordingly, various parts have become more expensive due to the chip shortage.
