iPhone SE for 299 euros at Aldi – is the offer worth it?

Aldi always has Apple products on offer at low prices. You can now buy the iPhone SE (2020) for 299 Euros at Aldi Nord. Is this offer worth it?

This is not the first time that the discounter Aldi has sold iPhones from Apple at particularly low prices. Since June 30, you can buy the handy iPhone SE (2020) at Aldi Nord. The smartphone costs 299 euros there, which is significantly below the RRP. But is almost 300 Euros worth it for an iPhone that already has a successor? atechbook checks the Aldi offer.

iPhone SE (2020) Refurbished at Aldi

Basically, you should know that the low price does not come by chance. The devices sold by Aldi are not new, but so-called “refurbished” products. These are devices that have been returned after purchase. Apple checks them professionally and refurbishes them if necessary. Thus, they are not used goods. Official refurbished offers are even available in the Apple store itself.

The promotion is only valid for Aldi Nord and while stocks last. However, the discounter is very cagey about details and the exact scope of delivery. It is not clear from Aldi’s information whether a power adapter will be included. It only says that there will be a starter set from Aldi Talk with a starting credit of 10 Euros in addition to the iPhone SE (2020) from Aldi. With Aldi Talk, users surf and make calls on a prepaid basis in the O2 network. The cheapest all-net flat rate including SMS flat rate costs 7.99 euros for four weeks, but other packages are also available.

Apple iPhone SE (2020) – what is the smartphone good for?

The SE series is Apple’s handy smartphone series. The iPhone SE (2020) is already the second generation; the first appeared in 2016, the subsequent third in early 2022, so there is already a more up-to-date SE model. However, with just two years under its belt, the 2020 model is not particularly old for an iPhone yet.

The hardware and software also show that. The iPhone SE (2020) works with an A13 Bionic chip and 3 GB of working memory. Aldi offers the device in black and white, each with 64 GB of internal storage.

In terms of dimensions, the iPhone is quite handy with a screen diagonal of 4.7 inches (11.94 cm; 1334 × 750 pixels at 326 ppi), comparable to the iPhone 8. However, the design looks a bit outdated with the wider edges and the home button with fingerprint sensor. However, many appreciate the handling and the physical button of the comparatively small smartphone. The casing is made of aluminum and glass and feels good in the hand.

Also interesting: This is what the 3rd generation iPhone SE can do.

The main camera of the iPhone SE (2020) only has a 12 MP wide-angle lens with an aperture of f/1.8. Compared to the larger iPhones, this equipment is of course quite frugal, but good pictures can still be taken with the camera. Only in low light do we see clear deficits. A portrait mode with bokeh effect as well as a panorama mode and optical image stabilization are available. The video resolution is 4K and up to 60 fps (120 FPS in slow motion).

The front camera also has 7 MP (video in Full HD and 30 fps). As mentioned before: You cannot expect any brilliant camera performance from the iPhone SE (2020). The fact that there is only one lens can be called a special feature nowadays. However, the optics are wonderfully compressed and the photo quality is more than sufficient especially in daylight. The color reproduction is especially positive.

No 5G

Although the iPhone SE (2020) features Wi-Fi 6, the smartphone cannot access the 5G network. As in the 2016 model, you can only surf with LTE speed at most. In contrast to the predecessor, both a nano- and an eSIM and thus DualSIM is possible. The iPhone SE (2020) at Aldi is waterproof according to IP67.

Conclusion of the iPhone offer at Aldi

The Aldi offer is definitely worth it in terms of price. The 64 GB version of the iPhone SE (2020) still costs 359 Euros at other retailers. The fact that the smartphones are “refurbished” should not deter anyone, since they have been officially tested. For comparison: Used devices – that is, devices that have actually been used – also cost 250 Euros in good condition.

You do not get a dewy smartphone with the iPhone SE (2020), but since Apple supplies its iPhones with software updates for a long time, that is not a problem. The starter set from Aldi Talk is included in the price and thus still brings a savings of another 12.99 Euros. So, if you are looking for a handy smartphone with a decent camera, the iPhone SE offer from Aldi is a good choice.
