Huawei has them, as do Motorola and Samsung – we are talking about foldable smartphones. Apple could also be the next big manufacturer to launch a foldable smartphone. But what is really true about the reports about a possible iPhone fold?
Foldable smartphones have been a topic since 2019. Samsung made a start with the first generation of the Galaxy Fold. This was followed by Huawei with the Mate X. Most recently, Samsung followed up with the Galaxy Z Flip and Galaxy Z Fold – the third generation. It was unclear for a long time whether Apple would also dare such an experiment. After all, the manufacturer has traditionally been rather conservative in terms of design. However, reports are published from time to time that indicate exactly that. Like the current report from South Korea, which already reveals first details about a possible iPhone fold.
LG to supply foldable displays for iPhone
The portal “Business Korea ” writes that Apple is experimenting with two types of implementation. Thus, it is apparently not yet clear whether the final product, which is currently going around the web as iPhone Fold or iPhone 15 Fold, can be folded like a clamshell phone or like a book. According to insiders, however, there is a lot to be said for the first solution. According to the paper, Apple has found a partner in LG Display, which is currently developing a foldable OLED panel that is supposed to be thinner than previous solutions. The flexible screen has a diagonal of 7.5 inches and its shape is reminiscent of Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip 3.
However, it will be some time before the iPhone Fold is ready. Insiders don’t expect a market launch before 2023, and since Apple usually unveils its new iPhones in September, it’s more likely to be the second half of 2023. So the Android competitors still have time to expand the foldable smartphone segment. Samsung is currently the top dog with a market share of 87% last year and will probably remain so for the time being.
Reports on the iPhone Fold have been going on for a long time
In November 2020, there were already reports in the Chinese newspaper Economic Daily News. According to the paper, Apple had already sent a test sample of its foldable iPhone to its production partner Foxconn. Foxconn was to carry out tests and clarify how a foldable iPhone could best be implemented. They looked at different approaches, for example, whether OLED or micro-LED technology would be more suitable for the iPhone Fold. This is because the display technology used has an influence on the folding mechanism, according to the explanation. According to the current status, the choice has fallen on an OLED display.
Another test process at that time concerned the stability of the hinge. It had to withstand folding and unfolding around 100,000 times to pass the test. That is more than twice as often as the folding process in MacBooks, but less than in current folding smartphones from Samsung. They can withstand at least 200,000 folding processes.
