What has been suspected for a long time is now official: There will no longer be a new Galaxy Note. However, Samsung is not saying goodbye to its pen smartphone, rather it is switching to a new series.
Samsung launched new smartphones of its two big premium series every year until 2020 – the Galaxy S in spring and the Galaxy Note in summer. Last year’s Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra combined both series for the first time and could be operated via stylus. At the same time, there was no new Note model. Both were quite concrete indications that Samsung is planning a big change in its smartphones. And the company has now officially confirmed it at MWC 2022.
Samsung Galaxy Note becomes Galaxy Ultra
At Mobile World Congress, Roh Tae-moon, head of Samsung Electronics’ Mobile Experience business unit, gave a glimpse of the company’s future plans during an interview with Korean media. He confirmed what many have already suspected: the Ultra model of the Galaxy S series will fully replace the Note series in the future. This means that Samsung will no longer introduce new Galaxy Note smartphones in the summer. The Galaxy Note 20 is thus the last of its kind. Samsung itself no longer offers the device in its German online store. However, it is still available at Media Markt, Saturn and Amazon.
For a long time, the Galaxy Note series mainly differed from the Galaxy S models in two features – the larger display and the pen control via S Pen. However, both features are also found in the Galaxy S21 Ultra from February 2021. The current Galaxy S22 Ultra comes even closer to the Note series. For the first time, Samsung has integrated a slot in the casing to accommodate the S-Pen. The manufacturer already pointed out during the smartphone’s unveiling that the Galaxy S and Note series will be united in the Ultra in the future.
Is there a new premium smartphone series?
However, the unification of both smartphone series does not mean that Samsung will do without innovations in the second half of the year. In the meantime, the manufacturer is expanding the range of its foldable smartphones. Instead of a new Note model, it showed the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and the Galaxy Z Flip 3 in August 2021. The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 is the first of its series that can be operated via S Pen. However, the pen cannot yet be stored directly in the casing like in the Galaxy S21 Ultra.
It can be assumed that Samsung will continue to use the summer to introduce new generations of its Fold and Flip series. Thus, we can expect the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and the Galaxy Z Flip 4 in August.
