The 12 best smartphones up to 400 euros

The smartphone upper class is sometimes really expensive. Prices around 1000 Euros are no longer uncommon. However, very well-equipped models are already available for considerably less money. atechbook lists smartphones up to 400 Euros that can compete with the flagships of the big smartphone manufacturers – or even used to be flagships that have now been replaced.

Buyers no longer have to spend a lot of money if they want a well-equipped smartphone. There are now several models in the price range of up to 400 Euros that are really worth buying. Some are even declared as top models by the manufacturers. We have looked around on the market and picked out the best smartphones that are priced below 400 Euros and have the potential to be real flagship alternatives.

The mentioned order does not correspond to a rating order.

What must a smartphone up to 400 Euros be capable of?

The focus is often on the Pro or Plus model of a series. But there are also the basic models that have many features of the big brothers, but are cheaper. Once they have been on the market for a few months, the prices drop and the smartphones become really interesting. The models known as China smartphones are also worth a closer look. Especially when they are officially sold in Germany with full support, as is the case with the manufacturers Xiaomi, Vivo and Oppo, for example.

In principle, all Android phones listed here have a large Fullview display, run at least Android 11 ex-factory and come with a triple or quad camera. The storage usually has a size of 128 GB. In addition, there is usually between 6 GB and 12 GB of working memory. It is not uncommon for smartphones up to 400 Euros to even have special features. These can be retractable cameras, dual displays, high-end processors or batteries with a particularly high charging capacity.

Compared with the cheaper models, the performance of the smartphones up to 400 Euros is better due to the powerful processors. This opens up applications that models in the lower price segment do not offer. Thus, the smartphones often not only support artificial intelligence, AI, and special gaming options, they also bring the basis for 4K videos.

With the iPhone SE (2020), there is even an Apple phone in the list that can be bought for less than 400 Euros from time to time. However, the above-mentioned minimum requirements for smartphones up to 400 Euros do not apply here. Apple sets different standards than the Android manufacturers, but manages to develop very good smartphones with hardware and software from one source.

The Nokia brand, under the leadership of the Finnish company HMD Global, has produced some recommendable smartphones in the past few years. OnePlus North 2

In the north, the manufacturer also relies on an ultra-wide angle with 8 megapixels and a macro lens with 2 megapixels in addition to the 50 megapixels. In addition, there is a front camera with 32 megapixels. The smartphone is shipped with Android 11, which OnePlus has overlaid with its own interface. It is comparatively light and does not need any unnecessary apps, complicated functions or other modifications. Not least because of that, OxygenOS is also considered one of the fastest user interfaces in smartphones.

The battery of the OnePlus Nord has a capacity of 4500 mAh. A fingerprint sensor is also on board, which the manufacturer has integrated under the display glass. There is no jack and micro-SD card slot. In return, the storage configuration is quite generous with 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of flash storage. Nord 2 is also available with 12 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage on request, but this model costs from 70 Euros more and thus no longer fits into the list of smartphones up to 400 Euros.

Galaxy A52 and A72 – new smartphones from Samsung in comparison.

Samsung Galaxy A72

Samsung also introduced the Galaxy A72 at the same time as the A52 models. Externally, the devices are very similar and the A72 also comes in different colors and a plastic casing. However, it has a larger display with 6.7 inches and the battery capacity is higher at 5000 mAh. However, users will have to do without a refresh rate of 120 Hz and 5G in the Samsung Galaxy A72.

The quad camera is very similar to that of the A52 5G, which is also included in this list. Besides a 64-megapixel main sensor, there is also an ultra-wide-angle with 12 megapixels as well as a 5-megapixel macro camera. Instead of the depth sensor, however, the Galaxy A72 brings an 8-megapixel telephoto lens. Thus, the model is better suited for those who zoom more often with their phone camera.

The Samsung Galaxy A71 is powered by the Snapdragon 720G, whose performance is on an upper-middle level. In addition, there is 128 GB of expandable storage and 6 GB of RAM. Xiaomi Poco F3

The Xiaomi Poco F3 is also a current smartphone. It was only launched at the end of March 2021 and belongs to the list of the best smartphones up to 400 Euros due to its good features. With a display diagonal of 6.67 inches, the device is not particularly compact despite its narrow edges. However, the chic looks and highlights like 120 Hz and 5G support make up for that. The performance is also impressive thanks to the Snapdragon 870 with 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage. Android 11 is already used as the operating system ex-works.

Unlike many other smartphones up to 400 Euros, the Xiaomi Poco F3 only brings three camera sensors on the back – a 48-megapixel main sensor, an ultra-wide-angle with 8 megapixels, and a 5-megapixel macro lens. A telephoto lens is missing, so friends of zooms are not in good hands here. However, a good sound is to be gotten out of the small device thanks to stereo speakers, Dolby Atmos and Hi-Res Audio. Owners do not have to do without Wifi 6 either.

Apple iPhone SE (2020)

With the iPhone SE (2020), Apple launched a new edition of its popular budget iPhone in April 2020. In the meantime, it is already available for about 400 Euros. With its small 4.7-inch screen, the smartphone is one of the most compact devices that buyers can currently get – not only from Apple but also from Android. Its looks are very similar to the iPhone 8, but it is technically equipped with more modern components. The factory operating system is iOS 13, but the update to iOS 15 is available in the meantime. Apart from the looks, the iPhone SE (2020) has not adopted much from the older model. On the contrary: The smartphone is technically quite modern.

The iPhone SE (2020) is powered by the A13 Bionic, which is also found in the iPhone 11 models. In addition, there is 3 GB of RAM and 64 GB of storage in the version presented here. A new feature is the support of NFC tags, a function that was previously only reserved for the iPhone XR, iPhone XS and iPhone 11. The budget smartphone is thus able to automatically execute certain automations by scanning the tags – such as playing playlists or dimming lights. Photos can be taken with a 12-megapixel single camera on the back.

Features of the Apple iPhone SE (2020) at a glance:

  • Display: 4.7-inch Retina, 1334 x 750 pixels
  • Processor: Bionic A13, Hexa-Core with 2.65 GHz
  • Memory: 64 GB, 3 GB RAM
  • Front camera: 7 MP, f/2.2

  • Price: approx. 400 euros

Verdict: Smartphones up to 400 Euros as an alternative to the top models

The smartphones listed here for up to 400 Euros show what good features are already available for the money. Whether fingerprint sensors under the display, wireless charging or cameras that can be extended out of the casing – many of the features known from the flagships were previously tested in the mid-range and upper-range. That is what makes the devices so interesting.

Other selected smartphones

  • Smartphones up to 100 Euros
  • Smartphones up to 200 Euros
  • The best smartphones for transmitting in the 5G network
  • The best outdoor smartphones
  • Smartphones with the best camera
  • Smartphones for children
  • The best smartphones for seniors

However, top models that have been replaced by more up-to-date versions and dropped in price are also found in the list of flagship alternatives. Although alternatives is almost the wrong word, since we are talking about former flagships. Thus, those who focus on performance in their smartphone search do not necessarily have to look around in the upper price categories. The middle tier also has some highlights to offer.
