The 7 best tripods for smartphone

If you often use your cell phone instead of a camera for photos or videos, a smartphone tripod is worthwhile. The compact mounts are very flexible and always ready for use, even on the go. But what distinguishes a good cell phone tripod? atechbook has compared the best products.

Nowadays, the image and video quality of smartphones no longer has to hide behind that of cameras. Especially for spontaneous shots, while traveling or on the road, the cell phone is often more practical, because it is always with you anyway. A tripod is a good way to get the best out of your smartphone camera: it allows you to align the image, the device doesn’t wobble, and you don’t need any other helping hands. Long-term shots in particular benefit from the image stability gained. atechbook reviews tripods in the test reveals important buying criteria for smartphone tripods and presents the best gadgets in comparison.

Smartphone tripods: Test and comparison of the best models

All smartphone tripods in the comparison are priced between ten and 70 euros and are suitable for all common smartphones, regardless of brand or size.

The price-performance winner: Traveler from Rollei

When you hear the word cell phone tripod, you probably first think of a classic tripod like the Traveler model from manufacturer Rollei: three fold-out legs, adjustable in height and angle, with smartphone holder. It thus fulfills all the basic requirements that a flexible and compact tripod should have.

The four-part legs can be extended and retracted as required using three segment flaps. It can take some time until all legs are aligned properly. The minimum height is 39 centimeters when fully retracted, and the maximum height is 120 centimeters. The Bluetooth connection to the cell phone makes it possible to operate the shutter release from a distance of up to ten meters. This is ideal for taking pictures and videos with the smartphone camera.

A nice extra: the integrated bubble level on the head indicates whether the cell phone tripod is standing straight on the ground. However, the individually adjustable legs and the rotatable attachment also allow the cell phone to be aligned straight independently. By the way, the tripod can also accommodate compact cameras and action cams if you unscrew the smartphone mount. Overall, the Traveler model is an all-rounder for the small budget and is thus the clear price-performance winner.

Operation Bluetooth remote trigger with 10 meter range
Bracket swiveling
Weight 600 grams
Maximum height 120 centimeters

  • Video swivel arm
  • Rubberized feet
  • Integrated spirit level

  • Height adjustment through segment flaps a bit fiddly

Mini tripod from Polarduck for use at the desk

For video conferences or interview recordings, the working height may often be somewhat lower, because the recording device is usually placed on a table anyway. Those who like to take macro shots with their cell phone also prefer a cell phone tripod with a low height.

A model like the Polarduck mini tripod is then the right choice in comparison. It is quickly assembled and takes up little space. The various attachments are particularly useful: The scope of delivery includes a mount for smartphones, a screw attachment for small cameras and beamers, and a clamping attachment for GoPros and sports cameras. For example, a webcam can also be attached to it for online meetings.

Operation Manually on the device
Mounting 135 degrees tiltable, 260 degrees rotatable
Weight 230 grams
Maximum height 22.4 centimeters

  • Very compact
  • Quickly assembled
  • Attachments for multiple devices
  • Ideal for macro photography

  • Low working height

Flexible octopus tripod for smartphone

Nature often enriches us with beautiful views and unique moments, which can also be captured great with your phone. But the most beautiful motif is unfortunately of little use if the camera is not properly aligned. Sometimes a conventional cell phone tripod simply cannot be set up appropriately on an uneven surface, for example in the forest or on stony ground. The risk of it tipping over together with the smartphone is high. This works better with an Octopus pod.

The flexible legs allow you to set up, hang or clamp such a smartphone tripod as you like. Thus, even branches, poles, railings or other objects become a cell phone holder. This allows for a lot of freedom when it comes to photo spots and creative picture angles.

The model from Bao Luo, for example, comes with a Bluetooth trigger and is therefore ideal for taking pictures with the front and rear camera. A small camera such as a GoPro can be screwed onto the quick-release plate – or the smartphone mount, which is included in the scope of delivery.

Operation Bluetooth remote shutter release with up to 10 meters range
Holder 360 degrees rotatable
Weight 250 grams
Maximum height 25.4 centimeters

  • Movable legs
  • Rubberized feet
  • Also suitable for GoPros and sports cameras

  • Low working height

Compact Traveler No. 1 – the best smartphone tripod

In the past, the Compact Traveler No. 1 from Rollei repeatedly scored top marks in practical tests by photography magazines. The workmanship, the high load capacity of up to five kilograms, the stability and the price-performance ratio were praised. As the name suggests, the smartphone tripod is primarily geared towards travel photography. With a length of 31.5 centimeters, it fits well in a backpack or travel bag.

The aluminum version of the tripod has two other nifty features: The center column can be reversed so that macro shots near the ground are also possible with the camera and cell phone. In addition, the tripod can also be used as a monopod when folded.

The drawback is that there is no cell phone mount on the tripod itself, so a suitable adapter must be purchased separately for smartphone photography. However, suitable Rollei models are available on the Internet for less than 10 euros. Considered purely as a cell phone tripod, the gadget is therefore expensive in comparison. However, those who also want to use it with a camera get a flexible and strong overall package.

Operation Manually on the device
Holder 360 degrees rotatable
Weight 890 gram
Maximum height 134 centimeters

  • Very stable
  • Can be used as a monopod
  • Also for cameras
  • Reversible center column for macro photography

  • No integrated cell phone holder
  • Comparatively high price

Joby GripTight One GP Magnetic Impulse with magnetic feet

The GripTight One GP Magnetic Impulse from the manufacturer Joby is an octopus tripod with flexible feet that can be wrapped around bars or similar. In addition, strong magnets are built into the non-slip feet – so the cell phone tripod also holds when attached sideways to metal plates, walls or rods, for example on a railing or refrigerator.

Weighing just 96 grams, the Joby gadget is a real lightweight and easy to transport. However, this is not least due to the size and the working height – which is unfortunately below average at just 16 centimeters. However, since the smartphone stand can also be hung up and is not primarily intended for use from a standing position, this is acceptable.

What is missing from this cell phone tripod is a sensor or remote control for the shutter release on the smartphone. That has to be done by hand with this model, for example by using the self-timer on the phone. Therefore, the device is only suitable to a limited extent for frequently taking pictures or videos with the front camera.

Operation Manually on the smartphone
Holder 360 degrees rotatable
Weight 96 grams
Maximum height 16.3 centimeters

  • Magnetic feet
  • Extra light

  • Low working height
  • No remote control

GerTong: LED ring light with tripod stand and cell phone holder.

For videos on YouTube, social media or in the morning online meeting, good exposure is essential to look professional. Shadows and areas of the image that are too dark tarnish the impression made by the camera. A ring light can also be worthwhile for photos: Unlike shooting with a flash, you can see the finished result through the viewfinder before you release the shutter. As a rule, the lighting conditions in the pictures are softer than with flash photography. This makes it possible to set the appropriate lighting during preparation for the final shot.

For cell phone photos and videos, a cell phone tripod with a ring light comes in handy. The model from GerTong, for example, has a 32-centimeter LED light with three white tones and seven RGB colors. With 13 brightness levels for each color tone and various multicolor effects, the right illumination is available for every picture. Particularly practical: In addition to the 150-centimeter tripod, the scope of delivery also includes a mini tripod that turns the ring light into a desk lamp or makeup light.

When folded, the smartphone tripod has a length of around 39 centimeters, and the weight including the ring light is around 1.5 kilograms. This makes transport and use on the go rather unwieldy. On the other hand, the model is very stable and flexible: The cell phone holder can be unscrewed so that the tripod is also suitable for cameras.

Operation Bluetooth remote control for the shutter release on the smartphone
Holder swivels and rotates 360 degrees
Weight 1,51 kilogram
Maximum height 150 centimeters
Ring light 135 degree tilt, USB power supply, white and colorful light with adjustable brightness and effects

  • Removable ring light with multiple color effects
  • Mini desktop tripod included

  • Quite heavy
  • Somewhat unwieldy for use on the go

Bluetooth stick from Atumtek – the 2-in-1 model

For a few years now, selfie sticks have become a must-have in the travel bag. Whether it’s a panoramic background or a group selfie, the extended arm is especially handy for getting as much as possible on a front camera picture. Meanwhile, there are also models on the market that additionally function as a cell phone tripod.

The Bluetooth stick from manufacturer Atumtek can be folded out to a tripod at the lower end of the pole and a small remote control can be removed. This allows the user to activate the cell phone’s shutter release remotely via Bluetooth and saves manual operation. When folded, the selfie stick is 19.5 centimeters long and thus just fits into a backpack or bag. When fully extended, it has a length of 79.5 centimeters, which is also the maximum working height in tripod mode.

A 2-in-1 selfie stick is ideal for use on the go and for filming vlogs. The flexibility gained from this is lost elsewhere: Such models are only suitable for smartphones. You cannot usually attach a camera to it or activate it with it.

Operation Bluetooth remote control with 10 meter range and 50 mAh battery
Bracket 360 degrees rotatable
Weight 172 grams
Maximum height 19.5 centimeters / 79.5 centimeters

  • Selfie stick and smartphone tripod in one
  • Good working height

  • Not suitable for cameras

How to succeed with a smartphone tripod photos and videos

A tripod for taking photos and videos with a cell phone has several advantages. It is compact and lightweight, which makes it ideal for use on the go. So if you like to take photos while traveling or in nature, you can fit a cell phone tripod in your carry-on luggage. The classic models are tripods with extendable legs. They offer the best working height and can be used without a raised base. A model with a swivel head is optimal for smooth video recordings. For more professional photography, there are also devices with ring light. A remote shutter release facilitates handling when shooting from a few meters away.

If the cell phone tripod is mainly used for indoor filming or for macro shots with the smartphone camera, the working height is not quite as important. In this case, a space-saving mini tripod or an octopus tripod with bendable legs is suitable. The latter are practical for attaching the smartphone to other objects or for hanging it up.

Those who already have a camera tripod can upgrade it to a cell phone tripod with a suitable adapter. In most cases, this can simply be screwed onto a quick-release plate – then you attach the phone in it with or without a case.

This is important for a smartphone tripod

To find the right cell phone tripod, a few factors play a role:

  • Stability: so that the shots are not blurred or blurred, the phone falls out of the holder or the tripod even falls over, it should be as stable as possible as well as robust. Non-slip feet ensure a secure stand.
  • Weight: Despite stability and robustness, smartphone tripods should also be as light as possible. They are often used for outdoor use, traveling or vlogging. A lightweight gadget fits in any pocket and is flexibly at hand.
  • Purpose: Depending on whether the tripod is mainly used to take pictures or record videos, tripods sometimes differ in terms of functions. Video tripods have a swiveling head with a handle to capture smooth motion shots. A photo tripod, on the other hand, often has a more static head without a handle. It usually tilts to the side to allow shooting in both portrait and landscape modes.
  • Features and Functions: Some tripods come with additional features, such as a built-in selfie stick. Others have additional arms that can be used to attach a light or microphone in addition to the camera. There are also models with a ring light, where you place the smartphone in the center of the light. Those who take pictures from a distance benefit from a tripod for the cell phone with remote control via WLAN or Bluetooth.
  • Price: As is so often the case with cell phone tripods, a high price does not equal high quality, while a low price is not an indicator of a low-quality product. When it comes to tripods for smartphones, there are already reasonable and stable models starting at around 15 euros. If the budget is a bit higher, you can also find variants that cost up to 100 euros due to useful additional functions or size.

Cell phone tripods at a glance: These are the advantages and disadvantages

In the comparison of the best cell phone tripods, it depends primarily on the purpose of use, whether the purchase is worthwhile. In addition, what is an advantage for one person may be a disadvantage for another – and vice versa. Basically, however, there are the following advantages and disadvantages.

The advantages of cell phone tripods:

  • small, light and compact – fit in any pocket
  • often with remote control for shutter release
  • flexible use (indoors and outdoors, on the road)
  • quite cheap (starting from 15 Euro)

The disadvantages of cell phone tripods:

  • less stability than conventional camera tripods with cell phone clamp
  • often low working height

What kind of smartphone tripods are there?

Tripods come – as the name suggests – with three legs. These are usually adjustable in height by a sliding mechanism. This feature is especially practical when no elevated work surface is at hand (a table, for example). They are particularly suitable for indoor use such as video recording or portrait photography. In nature, they are ideal for long exposure shots without shaking.

The so-called tripod models are also available as mini tripods, whose legs are much shorter. Those who mainly have their smartphone on the table for videos or online calls will make a good choice with such a gadget. Mini tripods can often be folded into a selfie stick – killing two birds with one stone, especially when traveling.

Octopus or monkey tripods usually also have three legs to stand on. These are not height-adjustable, but they are flexible. This makes the cell phone tripods very flexible: they can be used in a variety of ways when on the move and can be wrapped around poles, railings or other objects. When filming and taking pictures, you are not limited to a flat surface. The octopus tripods are therefore popular with influencers and vloggers.

If you also take photos with a camera, you can also use a compact camera tripod and just buy a suitable adapter for your smartphone. These are already available on the Internet for under 10 euros. They are screwed onto the tripod head, then the cell phone is placed in the adapter. The universal solution is suitable for both cameras and smartphones and is therefore more flexible – and in most cases more stable – than a pure cell phone tripod.

Cell phone tripod guide: is every model suitable for every smartphone?

The simple answer is yes. The clamp in which the phone is attached is usually sufficiently adjustable to clamp smartphones of any size and width. Nevertheless, depending on the smartphone model, it may be advisable to check the dimensions and weight before buying. The most important factor is whether the cell phone is used with or without a case.

The phones with the best smartphone cameras are in the upper class, and devices like the iPhone 13 Pro Max from Apple or the Galaxy S22 Ultra from Samsung are quite big compared to other devices. If a tripod is too small or light, it may tip over under the weight of a large phone or the head may not stay in the right position. For example, Apple’s iPhone 13 Pro Max weighs 238 grams, according to the manufacturer. A tripod like the ATUMTEK Bluetooth tripod, which itself weighs only 172 grams, may then not provide the desired stability – especially on uneven surfaces.
