They may never achieve the cult status that their gasoline-powered brethren held as an insignia of mod culture in the early 1960s, but electric scooters are right up there with the times: quiet, maneuverable, and no burden on the environment at that. atechbook presents five smart cruisers.

E-scooters are available in three speed classes: between 20 and 32 kilometers per hour, up to 45 and up to 110 kilometers per hour. When buying, the preferred use is decisive: whether as a pure means of transport for short distances, for example in the city, as a motorized vehicle for smaller tours or as a companion for longer distances on the country road. The emission-free crawlers are versatile. A driver’s license class A1 or class B (car driver’s license) is required, or a motorcycle driver’s license (A) for faster e-scooters. Drivers also need liability insurance and must wear a helmet on vehicles traveling faster than 20 kilometers per hour.

What must e-scooters be able to do?

The key question with an e-scooter is its range. The decisive factor here is: How powerful is the heart of the vehicle, its battery? Electric scooters use the following power sources: lead-gel batteries (cheapest at around 200 euros, but also with the shortest service life and range), lead-fleece batteries (suitable for short distances, very heavy), nickel-metal hydride and lead-nickel hydride batteries (longer service life and slightly better range than the first two options), and lithium-ion batteries (the best solution, long service life, but most expensive and non-recyclable).

There is no general answer to the question of range, because how long a battery lasts also depends on the individual driving style. An aggressive driving style consumes more energy than a gentle one. As a rule of thumb, the lead batteries used for the slower models last for about 20 kilometers. Faster e-scooters with lithium-ion batteries can travel about 50 kilometers, and the fast scooters about 70 to 100 kilometers, depending on the type of route (e.g., flat or with many inclines). But no matter how high the consumption, e-scooters are extremely affordable. For every 100 kilometers, the average cost of electricity is only 80 cents, which is one-sixth of what you have to invest in a two-stroke scooter for the same distance.

Winner of hearts: Govecs Schwalbe L3e

Nicht nur für Ostalgiker: Der E-Roller Schwalbe L3e von Govecs ist quasi die 2.0-Version des DDR-Kultrollers Simson KR 51, umgangssprachlich auch “Schwalbe” genannt, der in der DDR zwischen 1964 und 1986 produziert wurde. Es gibt ihn in einer 45- und einer 90-Stundenkilometer-Ausführung. Erstere darf man mit einem Pkw-Führerschein fahren, für Zweitere bedarf es der Fahrerlaubnisklasse A1. In puncto Fahrgefühl ist das mit stolzen 140 Kilogramm in der Klasse der Schwergewichte zu verortende Designwunder praktisch unschlagbar, nicht umsonst landete es beim Electric scootertest des ADAC souverän auf dem 2. Patz. Dort punktete die Schwalbe mit “dem kraftvollsten Motor im Feld, kurzen Ladezeiten, guter Verarbeitung und ausgewogenen Fahreigenschaften”. Im Boost-Modus fühlt man sich auf diesem Kraftpaket von einem Electric scooter eher wie Peter Fonda in “Easy Rider” als wie Phil Daniels in “Quadrophenia”.

Fährt man den Cruiser nicht im gemächlichen Eco-, sondern im Boost-Modus, reicht eine Batteryladung für maximal 80 Kilometer, je nach Fahrverhalten und Streckenbeschaffenheit. Leider hat das sonst fast uneinholbare Gefährt auch einige nicht zu beschönigende Defizite. So ist der – immerhin in nur 5 Stunden aufladbare – Battery fest verbaut und mit einem 5 Meter langen Spiral-Ladekabel ausgestattet, das mit ihm fest verbunden ist. Ergo: Batterywechsel oder Nachladen im Büro oder in der Wohnung – Fehlanzeige. Auch die Nutzung des USB-Anschlusses ist mit Hürden verbunden, befindet sich dieser doch unter der Sitzbank. Weitere Wermutstropfen sind das fehlende Helmfach und der relativ hohe Preis von zirka 7.000 Euro. Ansonsten: Sieger der Herzen!

Cult with flaws: Piaggio Vespa Elettrica 70

The cult brand’s e-scooter is available in a 45- and a 70-kilometer-per-hour version. The latter scores with brisk acceleration when starting at traffic lights. In its electric scooter test, the ADAC particularly praises that “the chassis finds the best compromise between agility and comfort.” The good ergonomics are also highlighted positively. On the other hand, what was singled out as a clear shortcoming is “by far the worst driving performance in the test”. According to the ADAC, this meant that driving fun largely fell by the wayside. Nevertheless, the Vespa Elettrica 70 model landed in a solid third place with an overall score of 2.5.

The electric scooter iamelectric X1 is equipped with a Bosch motor and guarantees a high level of safety with its disc brakes. With a maximum range of 70 kilometers, it falls about 30 kilometers behind the leaders in this category, but its replaceable 26 amp-hour lithium-ion battery from Samsung puts it at the top of the broad midfield. This is a unique selling point, as most e-scooters are only equipped with a 20 amp-hour power source.

For the iamelectric X1 e-scooter, this means around 10 kilometers more range than comparable models, which on average already break down after 60 kilometers.
