The best e-scooters with road approval in Germany

E-scooters were approved for road use in the summer of 2019, with the aim of driving the traffic turnaround in Germany. They are intended to make it easier for commuters to switch from cars to public transport and bridge the “last mile” between home and the subway, bus and office. atechbook has tracked down the most attractive speedsters.

Common to all e-scooters is the minimum user age of 14 years prescribed by German law and the maximum permissible speed of 20 kilometers per hour. When used in road traffic, liability insurance is also mandatory. In towns and cities, bicycles must be ridden on cycle paths. If there is no cycle path, evasion onto the carriageway is permitted. If the e-scooters do not have road approval in accordance with the Road Traffic Licensing Regulations (StVZO), for example because they are not throttled to 20 km/h, they may only be used on private property.

What must e-scooters with road approval in Germany be able to do?

The powerhouse: The-Urban xC1

The built-in lithium-ion battery with 36 volts and 7.8 ampere hours has a maximum capacity of 280.8 watt hours. This gives the Street Scooter enough power for a maximum range of 25 kilometers. The average charging time of only 3-4 hours is excellent. The-Urban xC1 model is equipped with an electric front brake and a mechanical rear brake (disc brake) for reliable braking performance. An easy-to-use folding mechanism ensures good manageability.

When it comes to the Metz Moover e-scooter, you notice at first glance what sets it apart from other e-scooters: It has a wide footboard and large wheels with pneumatic tires, which promises stable road holding and lots of riding fun. Thanks to a sturdy folding mechanism, it can be quickly folded and put in the trunk or taken to the track. The throttle is operated with the right thumb and is easy to reach with the hand on the steering wheel. The simple one: iconBIT IK-1969K City

The IK-1969K City e-scooter from iconBIT is an affordable model that is street legal. It is equipped with a front-wheel motor with 350 watts, which accelerates it to the maximum permissible 20 kilometers per hour. As a city scooter, it is designed primarily for flat terrain, but can also cope with bumpy roads thanks to its Honeycomb tires. These are rubber tires in which a series of hexagonal air chambers provide cushioning. They are also lighter than pure solid rubber tires. Remarkably for a scooter in this price range, shock absorbers are fitted at the rear.

A combination of electric brakes at the front and a disc brake at the rear brings the vehicle safely to a halt. Once at its destination, the handlebars can be released and folded down in just a few simple steps, and the handlebars can be locked into place on the rear mudguard. At 17 kilograms, however, the scooter is comparatively heavy. Thanks to IP protection (IPX4), the IK-1969K e-scooter copes well with moisture. Overall, it is rather plainly equipped, which can be seen in the simply designed display and the lack of Bluetooth connectivity, for example.

The compact one: Xiaomi Mi Scooter 1S

The Xiaomi Mi Scooter 1S has a range of between 20 and 30 kilometers in addition to very simple and intuitive operation and compact dimensions (108 x 43 x 114 cm). This depends on factors like body weight and driving style, but is sufficient for most commuters in the city. However, Xiaomi has throttled the scooter very aggressively for the German market. It is true that the scooter can reach up to 20 kilometers per hour with the 300-watt motor. In practice, however, the speed is usually 1 to 2 km/h below that. Thanks to the 8.5-inch pneumatic tires, the scooter has a high level of stability.
