WhatsApp chats can now also be taken from Android to iPhone

Since last year, it has been possible to transfer WhatsApp chats from an Android smartphone to an iPhone. But finally, it also works the other way around and without a third-party solution. This makes the switch from Android to iPhone much easier.

Unlike competing messenger services, it was not easy to transfer WhatsApp chats to another smartphone operating system for a long time. But that has changed in the meantime. Since fall 2021, the chat history can be transferred from iPhones to the first Android devices thanks to Android 12, and now the transfer from Android to iOS will follow.

Transfer function from Android to iOS is coming

Yesterday, WhatsApp and Apple announced a new transfer function that will make it possible in the future to transfer the chat history from an Android smartphone to an iPhone – along with all messages, pictures and videos. The function is still in the beta phase, but it should be officially rolled out soon.

The transfer of chats is possible thanks to the new version of ” Transfer to iOS “, which Apple makes available in the Google Play Store. With it, beta testers can already transfer their complete WhatsApp history from Android to iPhone. Such a simple solution has been wished by many users for years. However, the development of an official solution was cumbersome and lengthy.

As early as August 2021, WhatsApp CEO Will Cathcart announced that the messenger was working on a transfer function from Android to iOS . A month later, the first hints of this appeared in the WhatsApp beta for Android smartphones, as atechbook reported . Finally, in January 2022, hints were also found in WhatsApp beta for iPhone.

In screenshots, WABetaInfo showed at that time, how the import of chat histories in WhatsApp for iOS should look. The look has not changed in the now rolled out function. According to this, the messenger asks for permission to restore chats when setting up the iPhone. In the same window, a warning also appears that the transfer is no longer possible afterwards, should users want to skip this step. The screenshots also show what the transfer process looks like. A progress bar can be seen, as well as the hint that the smartphone has to be unlocked and the app has to be open.

This is how the WhatsApp switch from Android to iOS works.

WABetaInfo describes on its blog how the chat transfer from Android to iOS works. According to this, the prerequisite is an Android device with at least version 5 and an iPhone, which must run iOS 15.5 or newer. Both the Android smartphone and the iPhone have to be in the same Wi-Fi network for the WhatsApp data transfer to work. A cable connection is not required. However, the iPhone must not be set up, since the transfer only works when the device is set up for the first time. Many users will therefore be forced to reset their iPhone before the transfer.

Once both smartphones are prepared and users have made a WhatsApp backup on the Android device, they have to launch the “Transfer to iOS” app on the Android phone and follow the instructions displayed there. After the transfer, the latest WhatsApp version must be installed on the iPhone. Important: Users have to register with the same cell phone number that they used for WhatsApp on Android. After registration and the first login, the chat data is then also available on the iPhone.

Also interesting: Multi-device use on WhatsApp now enabled for all users.

Two-tier system made the move difficult

The problem with moving WhatsApp chats across systems is the use of the cloud platform. While WhatsApp on Android stores backups in Google Drive, Messenger on the iPhone uses Apple’s iCloud. Since these two systems cannot communicate with each other, the detour via a cable and a separate app is required.
