WhatsApp develops chat transfer from Android to iOS

Meanwhile, it is possible to take WhatsApp chats from an iPhone to a Samsung smartphone. Now the transfer from Android to iPhone is to follow soon.

For years, there was no way to transfer WhatsApp chats between iPhones and Android smartphones. Therefore, when switching from one system to another, all messages are always irrevocably gone. WhatsApp has ignored this problem long enough, but is now working on an appropriate solution.

With the introduction of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 and the Z Flip 3, the messenger officially introduced a possibility for the first time, with which at least buyers of a Samsung smartphone can take their chats from an iPhone. Now there are hints that the company is also working on enabling a switch from Android to iOS.

New function already in development

The insider site “WABetaInfo” has a screenshot that shows the chat transfer to iOS. Specifically, the image shows the text “Transfer chats to iOS” and “Transfer your chat history and media to your new iPhone.”

Unfortunately, the leaked information does not reveal how exactly the chat transfer works. However, “WABetaInfo” assumes that a USB-C to Lightning cable is required. This enables a direct connection between the Android smartphone and the iPhone. Probably, you also need the app “Transfer to iOS”, which is available for free in the Google Play Store. The procedure could be similar to the transfer from an iPhone to a Samsung smartphone. This also requires a cable and the “Samsung Smart Switch” app.

The new feature is currently still in development and will be available to beta users first. No exact timeline for the official launch has been announced yet. When it is, you will find all the information on atechbook.

Two-tier system makes the move difficult

The problem with moving WhatsApp chats across systems is the use of the cloud platform. While WhatsApp on Android stores the backups in Google Drive, the messenger on the iPhone uses Apple’s iCloud. Since these two systems cannot communicate with each other, the detour via a cable and a separate app is required.
