WhatsApp wants to significantly expand emoji reactions

WhatsApp’s previous feature for reactions is limited to six emojis. A comprehensive update is now to provide access to the entire emoji library for reactions. A big win for fans of the visual language.

For an upcoming update to the app, WhatsApp is working on the ability to react to messages with any emoji. Currently, this is only possible with six of the more than 3000 emojis – including the “thumbs up” emoji, the heart emoji or the crying emoji, for example.

Who this is too little leeway to give his reactions enough expression, will be happy. In the future, it will be possible to react with any emoji, according to the news of the website WABetaInfo . After the extension of the feature has already been discussed for Android and the desktop version of WhatsApp, it is now presented for the iPhone to the delight of iOS users.

Since the new feature is still under development at the moment, it is uncertain when to expect a release. Most likely, beta testers will be the first users to have the pleasure of the full emoji bandwidth for reactions.

atechbook already reported on emoji reactions to WhatsApp messages in May 2022. Even here, the editorial team suspected that an expansion of the function could follow – the colorful icons are too popular as non-verbal communication helpers.

Emojis often convey feelings better than text

In real interaction, we express our feelings through our voice or the emphasis of words. In written communication, we lack this level. As a result, some statements are quickly misunderstood. Frustration and anger are often the result.

Emojis, and with them the extended functionality of WhatsApp responses, help us to communicate more clearly and avoid misunderstandings by allowing us to convey the emotions that would otherwise be missing. Not only communication scientists are therefore interested in the effects that the icons bring to our written communication, but researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute for Experimental Software Engineering are also investigating emojis in terms of how they convey mood and emotion . The broad interest in science shows that emojis are a communication phenomenon to be taken seriously. atechbook will continue to follow the emoji trend.
